Flagstaff, AZ & restaurants

I've been meaning to post this for about a month. We spent Labor Day
weekend in the Flagstaff area, hiking etc.--it's our favorite getaway from
the heat down here in the desert. It's got to be one of the most
veg-friendly towns on the planet, especially for its relatively small
size. There's Macy's on Beaver Street, the Morning Glory, another place
on San Francisco Street that I can't remember the name of but it's
probably the most "mainstream" and also serves fish and chicken to
accommodate people like my mother who insists "senior citizens need their
protein" (don't even respond to that; she and I have argued it ad
nauseam), another new place on Aspen Street near the old movie theatre
where they never assume you want cheese and if you do they always ask if
you want regular or soy cheese--all these places are in the old town area
within 2 blocks of Route 66 and within maybe 5 blocks of each other tops.

I just wish I lived there, so I could wear sweaters instead of
shorts all winter. Jan Bennicoff's soups look great. I'm going to make
some in defiance of the weather, which is still in the 90s.

And a propos of restaurants, we generally try to avoid chains, but the
Black Bean Burrito and Salsa Company (which we discovered in Flagstaff,
but now there's one here in Tucson) offers an impressive variety of tasty
veg burritos with lots of options on contents and many different salsas.
But while in Phoenix we went to Applebee's with a friend and there was
pretty much nothing on the menu. Even the house salad, ordered without
cheese, came with bacon and chopped egg! Aaaaggghh! Chili's, if you have
to do that chain thing, is much more accommodating.
