I have started a small herb garden just recently. The best way to start
is by getting small herb plants from a garden centre, DIY superstore, or
even a flower shop. I just got a pot of sweet basil for 85p in a flower
shop here.

Plant them and let them grow. Don't start harvesting from them until they
have had time to establish themselves, and then don't take too much off to
start with. I'm not sure what the basil will do, but my sage, rosemary,
chives, lemon balm, marjoram and mint have survived the winter and begun
growing again. Mint, lemon balm and marjoram will die right back to dead
sticks then come up again.

If anyone else is more of an expert then please post to the list. I just
looked at my list rules and this comes under the heading of foods related
to low-fat eating. Fresh herbs add a lot of flavour to low-fat foods and
for some of us, growing them ourselves is the only way we can afford to
use them!
